PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP vIA MENTORING
Why Mentoring Matters
As a believer, growing in faith is a journey best walked with others. Personal mentoring—where a more mature Christian guides you—helps you deepen your relationship with Jesus. It is a bit like a lifestyle apprenticeship, or an intentional friendship. This is important because many truths are better "caught" than "taught." We learn far more by watching others and doing things with them - rather than just learning from books or church services.
Biblical Foundation: Paul on Mentoring
The following verses from Paul show how he mentored others and encouraged them to do the same, emphasizing guidance and imitation in faith:
- 1 Corinthians 11:1: “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.”
- 2 Timothy 2:2: “You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.”
- Philippians 4:9: “Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
A First Step Toward Personal Mentoring
Pray and ask God to lead you to a trustworthy mentor—someone who reflects Christ’s character and lives out biblical truth. Look for a mature believer in your church or small group, and start with simple conversations about faith. It could be as simple as an occasional text or phone call to discuss life issues, or as official as a weekly meeting to talk about the Bible.
